Mothers’ Union News ~
Sue Goold, the Education Officer of Cotswold Care Hospice, gave us an interesting and informative and talk about the services offered at the Burleigh (Nr. Minchinhampton) premises.
The aim is to offer support for people with life-limiting conditions – and for their families. Many assume that those visiting an Hospice have a condition which will terminate their lives in the nearish future – this condition probably being cancer. However there are many conditions which severely limit people’s lives – and those of their family - or leave them dependant on a carer.
The Hospice provides a day of care and activity including transport and lunch. Services provided include hairdressing and other personal care, group activities like Art, massage, one-to-one counselling if requested for either client or family, and many other support needs. The garden is for enjoying.
Referrals may be made in many ways – by friends or relatives, by the person themselves – and thus access is not limited by method of referral. Once a referral is made it will be assessed by the staff at the hospice and, in consultation with the client, comments will be invited from GP, District Nurse etc as appropriate.
Most clients will attend for one day a week – and currently this is offered for a period of twelve weeks. People may ask for another session. Another important part of the work is support for those bereaved – either in recent times or even years ago - and access to this is not limited.
A development programme is nearing completion and original house will be even more suitable for current needs.
Fundraising is a constant activity as costs are not covered by grants (NHS etc) and the Hospice is therefore even more grateful to the many volunteers who share their skills to offer the wide range of services – from driving to Art groups – to cooking – hairdressing, gardening- and so on – the list is very long!
Although many of us knew of the work we were all very pleased to hear more – and some to learn for the first time.
THANK YOU, COTSWOLD CARE, FOR ALL YOU DO FOR SO MANY.
As a Branch we are very pleased to welcome Joy Rochester and Angela Pearce as Members – and we look forward to two more people joining us on 10th August. Meanwhile we wish a happy day to Olga as her daughter marries on 3rd August – and many joyous years to them. Jean Riggs
